Abstract

877,279. Wedge fasteners.. TAYLOR, WORDSWORTH & CO. Ltd. Jan. 22, 1960 [Feb. 26, 1959], No. 6723/59. Class 44. A clutch for detachably connecting a rod 10 to a spindle 11 comprises a frusto-cone 12 at one end of the spindle and coaxial therewith, a plug 14 axially slidable in the cone and a plurality of balls 13 within the frusto-cone, such that the rod 10 being passed through the plug 14 into the frusto-cone, the rod is gripped against withdrawal by the wedging action of the balls between its surface and the tapered interior wall of the frusto-cone, and further comprising a release member 16 attached to the plug 14 exteriorly of the frusto-cone 12 and capable of axial movement in relation to the spindle 11, a spigot portion of the plug being arranged to slide within the frusto-cone when actuated by the release member, to push the balls out of wedging engagement and thereby to release the rod 10, for withdrawal. As shown, in which the invention is applied to a column bumping press, the release member 16 is operatively connected with the plug 14 by a housing 15.
