Cigarette paper 11, Fig. 2, passing to a continuous-rod machine is fed between a resilientlysurfaced positively driven backing drum 22 and a rotary die 26 inked projections 31, Fig. 7, on which form on the paper patterns of dots 34, Fig. 9, some or all of which have, and serve to reinforce, central perforations 40 formed due to extra proudness of the corresponding projections, these perforations forming air inlets overlying the tobacco in the plain or filter-tip cigarettes produced by the machine. Preferably there are between two and six perforations in each pattern, located between one third and one half of a cigarette length from the mouth end of each cigarette. As shown, the die 26 has an adjustable mounting 32, inking means 28 and two diametrically opposed sets of projections 31 each associated with an indicia-printing device 30, there being an alternative dyeing device (shown in broken lines on Fig. 2) or devices for printing in another colour or colours. After printing, the paper 11 may have spaced patches of stiff paper applied thereto to form cigarette mouthpieces. The dot pattern may be such that no dots are aligned axially or transversely of the cigarette, e.g. may be a tilted V. In a modification, air-inlet perforation reinforcement is provided by covering the paper 11 over the area of the pattern with ink or a cork or paper layer interrupted only at the perforations and which may extend completely around the cigarette and be part of a mouthpiece.
