Abstract
Crystalline polymers of olefins of formula R1-CH=CH2, where R1 is alkyl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkenyl or aryl, are stabilized against the effects of heat, ageing, and light by adding thereto 0,02%-2% of a silicone containing the group: <FORM:0876762/IV (a)/1> where R is alkyl, aryl, alkylaryl, acyl or aroyl or some but not all of the groups R are hydroxyl. The olefin polymer may be polypropylene or polybutene. The silicones may be solid, liquid or rubbery, and silicones having a low degree of condensation, which can be further polymerized during spinning or extrusion in the presence of catalysts such as zinc or cobalt salts, may be used. Examples describe polyolefin compositions comprising silicones in which each silicon atom in the specified group is attached to (1) two propyl groups; (2) one methyl and one hydroxyl group and (3) two phenyl groups. The compositions may also contain basic substances, e.g. a polyalkyleneimine, and may be melt-spun into fibres, which may be stretched at elevated temperatures.
