Abstract
A process for the product of complex fertilizers comprises treating phosphoric acid with the liquid product resulting from the reaction at over 80C., of potassium chloride and nitric acid, the nitric acid being in excess of 4 mols of nitric acid to 3 mols potassium chloride, so as to give a product containing free nitric acid, after the formed nitrosyl chloride and chlorine have been removed. The resulting liquid product may be neutralized before and/or after the addition of the phosphoric acid by ammonia or potassium hydroxide or carbonate. The final product may be granulated and may also contain other fertilizing materials. The nitrosyl chloride which is removed from the reaction system may be treated to give oxides of nitrogen and chlorine, the nitrogen oxides being further oxidised in nitric acid which may be recycled in the system.
