[Also in Group XXXIV] For applying a thrust with a variable mechanical advantage to a pitman 24, for operating the brakes of a motor vehicle, a pendant lever 10, pivoted at 12, has an effort arm 16 and working arm 18 formed with the cam faces 20, 21, 22, engaging a roller follower 26 attached to the pitman, so that when the effort arm 16 is rotated anti-clockwise against reaction of a spring 14, the lift of the cam nose 22 first causes the pitman to move with a low mechanical advantage to take up slack in the system, after which the slope of the face 20 provides a high mechanical advantage to provide the braking effort. Further movement of the pedal reduces the mechanical advantage again and allows the pedal to be pumped if fluid in an associated hydraulic system is low.
