Abstract
876,323. Dashpots. WEST & CO. Ltd., ALLEN, and TURNER, W. June 24, 1958 [June 14, 1957], No. 18820/57. Class 108(3). In an electrically operated dashpot a cylinder 3 housing a piston 1 is supported on a bobbin 5 of a solenoid 6 by a rod 9 and a magnetic plug 8. An armature 11 is hinged to a frame 7 at 12. When a current passes through the solenoid 6 a piston rod 2 is pulled upwards by the magnetic field generated. Portion 3a of the cylinder 3 retards the piston 1, the cylinder being held down by armature 11 and the rod 9. When the piston 1 clears the portion 3a the piston and rod will rise rapidly and hit the top of the cylinder 3 with sufficient force to raise the cylinder, the rod 9 and the armature 11. In a second embodiment the armature is disc-shaped and is adjustably bolted to the cylinder. The armature rests on top of a turned over portion of the frame. An additional weight or spring means may be employed to hold down the armature.
