Abstract
875,398. Soldering. COMMUNICATIONS PATENTS Ltd. April 14, 1960 [Jan. 20, 1959], No. 37412/58. Class 83 (4). In releasing a soldered connection the heated surface of a tool is used to melt the solder and a supply of gas under pressure is used to establish a blast of gas directed at the connection to remove sufficient solder to release or facilitate the release of the connection. The tool may comprise an electrically heated soldering iron alongside the bit of which is attached a tube connected to an air supply reservoir, supply of air through the tube being controlled by a pressbutton valve. The front end of the tube may pass through the bit. Instead of or in addition to the tube one or more passages may be provided in the bit e.g. an axial bore connected to a flexible air supply line. In a modification the tool comprises a wire loop, heated by a current, 'a pistol grip handle and a cylinder and piston operated by a lever on the handle to function as a pump to deliver air to a reservoir in the handle. A tube associated with the loop communicates with the reservoir through a valve opened by a trigger and the operation includes operating the lever on the handle several times to charge the reservoir, heating the loop and applying it to melt the solder and actuating the trigger to direct a blast of air through the tube. A number of blasts for each operation of a lever may be provided. An annular array of steel bristles to collect solder particles is arranged about a hole in a member through which the soldering iron may pass to unsolder a connection on a chassis or printed circuit board. A tangled mass of fibres may be employed or a tank containing water with a hole over which the connection is located may be used to collect solder particles. A continuous flow of air may be used and the air may be supplied from a line, a cylinder or a foot ot motor operated pump. According to the Provisional Specification a vacuum may be created adjacent the connection to draw solder away therefrom.
