Abstract

<PICT:0866755/IV(c)/1> <PICT:0866755/IV(c)/2> <PICT:0866755/IV(c)/3> Apparatus for the continuous washing of webs of textile material in strip form comprises means for forming the web into a series of loops over adjustable jockey rolls which are loaded to tension the web, means for soaking the web with a cleansing fluid and subsequently applying to the loops of the web a series of squeezing and re-soaking actions alternately, and driving means for the web, controlled to maintain a substantially uniform tension in the web, by adjustment of the jockey rolls effected by variation in tensions in the loops. As shown, squeezing rolls 3 rest on each other and each alternate roll may be driven by electric motors 5. Jockey rolls 10 may be disposed in staggered relationship either side of rolls 3. Web 12a passes through soaking chamber 13 from which may be erected a vertical sluicing chamber 14 surmounted by draw rolls 15 and spray ring 16. The web 12a may be treated in flat condition, but it is preferred to be treated in transversely folded condition. This may be achieved by passage through a ring 17. The positions of jockey rolls 10 and speeds of motors 5 may be varied to maintain uniform tension in web 12a. Opposed nozzles 18 may serve to resoak the web 12a with cleansing fluid. If desired, the web 12a may pass through a plurality of apparatuses or alternatively two or more webs may be treated simultaneously in the same apparatus.
