Abstract

In a material reduction mill comprising a drum mounted for rotation on a substantially horizontal axis and having a diameter length ratio of at least 2 : 1, inwardly-projecting crusher bars on its cylindrical wall, and circular keying liners extending inwardly from its end walls and defining a keying zone in the space between inwardly extending apices of the liners and the cylindrical wall of the drum, a synthetic charge of reduction media is provided having a volume inclusive of voids which is from about 10% to about 45% of the volume of the keying zone. The synthetic charge may be composed of steel balls graduated in size from about one inch to about six inches in diameter. Use may be made, however, of higher specific gravity reduction media, e.g. tungsten carbide. Alternatively, reduction media composed of metals lighter than iron may be used or use made of a pebble charge having a specific gravity not materially greater than that of the mill feed. Further, the synthetic charge may be composed partly of large lumps of feed material and partly of reduction media composed of pebbles. The metallic reduction media may be of non-spherical shape. Specifications 696,137, 696,164 and 863,454 are referred to.
