Abstract

Racemic amino acids such as DL-glutamic acid and DL-threonine are continuously resolved by introducing a saturated solution of said racemic acid into the bottom of a resolution tower at such a rate as to fluidize crystal seeds of one of the optically active isomers of said compound fed in at the top, extracting grown and precipitated crystals in the solution at the bottom and causing said solution which contains the other optical isomer to overflow at the top at such a rate that it removes with it any fine crystals of racemate or of the other optically active isomer which might be formed. The process may be conducted in a number of resolution towers for L- and D-isomers connected alternately in series, or in a number of pairs of D- and L- resolution towers in parallel connection connected in series. Grown crystals may be crushed and screened or reduced in size by partially dissolving them in a solvent in order to provide seed crystals. Seed crystals coated on nuclei of clay or rubber particles may also be used. Specification 844,952 is referred to.ALSO:A racemic mixture of amino acids is continuously resolved by introducing a saturated solution of said racemic mixture into the bottom of a resolution tower at such a rate as to fluidize crystal seeds of one of the optically active isomers of said mixture fed in at the top, extracting grown and precipitated crystals in the solution at the bottom and causing said solution which contains the other optical isomer to overflow at the top at such a rate that it removes with it any fine crystals of racemate or of the other optical isomer which might be formed.
