Abstract

853,762. Excavating machines. WARNER & SWASEY CO. July 2, 1959 [July 16, 1958], No. 22729/59. Class 68(1) Earth- and like-moving apparatus comprises a boom pivoted for vertical movement and formed in three telescoping sections which are extended or retracted by fluid-motor means mounted within the telescoping sections. As shown, the boom 10 is pivoted at 31 on a turntable 11 on a transport vehicle, the turntable carrying also a cab 20 and power unit 22, 24. Each of the telescoping sections 30, 28, 26 consists of four parallel longitudinal tubes 44, 63 or 73 joined by welded side-plates 46, 64 or 74, and concave rollers 62, 66 bear on the tubes 44, 63, 73 to guide the sections during relative movement. The section 30 has two sets of transverse tubes 48, 49 and 50, 51 welded thereto, to receive two bolts 57 in one or other of the sets, whereby the section may be secured, in either of two selected positions, to triangular plates 34 which are pivoted at 31 to the gussets 33 and are connected for up and down swinging of the boom 10, to a pair of fluid-motors 38. The sections are extended by fluid-motors 78, 80, the piston rod of the motor 78 being secured at 95 to the cylinder 97 of the motor 80. The motors are double-acting and the fluid supply and exhaust are through pipes 141, 144 and concentric passages in the piston rod assembly 90, 91 of the motor 78, and connecting pipes 142, 143. The arrangement is such that, on admission of fluid through the pipe 141, the piston 981 of the motor 80 is moved to project the piston rod 98 and run out the outermost section 26 before the intermediate section 28 moves. When the section 26 is fully extended, the piston 87 and its rod 90, 91 is projected to run out the intermediate section 28. When the sections are retracted by admitting fluid at 144, buffer springs 153, 155 take the shock. The motor cylinders are pivoted at 86, 103 to transverse plates and rollers 104, 109, 113 guide the motor parts during extension and retraction. The digging tool 16 is operated through links 134, 138 by a fluid-motor 129 pivoted at 130 to a plate secured to a rotatable sleeve 116 mounted at the end of the section 26 by a bearing ring 118, a locating flange 119 which is welded to the end of the section 26 and is straddled by flanges 120 on the sleeve 116, and bearing rollers 123. The sleeve 116 is turnable on its axis by a vane type motor 124 having a drive shaft 126 connected to a socket on the sleeve.
