Abstract
Boron hydrides are prepared by reacting an alkali metal, e.g Li, Na, or K, borohydride with an anhydrous tin halide in vacuo, or in an inert gas atmosphere free from oxidising gases, e.g. a stream of nitrogen. An intimate solid mixture of finely divided stannous chloride and KBH4 may be reacted at a temperature at which B2H6 is not decomposed immediately on formation, e.g. 150-270 DEG C., with agitation. The tin halide should be in stoichiometric excess and the reaction may alternatively, be effected in an inert liquid, e.g. paraffin. B2H6 is condensed in liquid N2 traps and the production of B4H10, B5H9, B5H11, and crystalline B10H14 is referred to.
