Abstract
In the agglomeration of powdered ores there is employed as binding agent a hydrocarbon oil emulsion and a powdered mixture of pitch and a hydraulic binding agent such as cement, lime or slag which, when added to granular elements such as coke or limestone or to the ore, forms a viscous binder to which ore particles adhere to form grains or nodules that can be sintered, e.g. on a band sintering grate. Finely divided ore can be agglomerated on small drops of water, the resulting nodles being used as granular elements on which the binding agent can be formed for the agglomeration of further amounts of powdered ore. The emulsion may be an inverse emulsion of water in oil obtained by mixing a weak alkaline lye with an oil produced from tars or petroleum at a temperature up to 90 DEG C. The other ingredient may be a mixture of equal weight of pitch and cement.
