Abstract

Compositions comprising aminotriazine-aldehyde resins are modified by one or more polyethylene glycols of formula HOCH2CH2-(OCH2CH2)n(H, in which n is 15 to 170, to give products of improved flow and fusibility characteristics. The preferred aldehyde for the aminoplast resin is formaldehyde but other aldehydes e.g. benzaldehyde may be used if desired. Melamine is the preferred aminotriazine although ammeline, melam and benzoguanamine may also be used. The ratio of aldehyde to aminotriazine generally ranges from 0,43 to 2 aldehyde radicals per amino radical of the aminotriazine and the amount of polyethylene glycol employed ranges from 2% to 30% by weight of the weight of the aminoplast resin or resin forming agent used. The polyethylene glycols may be added as modifiers in the initial condensation process to form the aminotriazine-aldehyde resin, or at any convenient stage after partial condensation. Examples are given of laminates prepared from glass fabric impregnated with aqueous resins prepared from either a mixture of formaldehyde, melamine and a commercial polyethylene glcycol or a mixture of a commercial melamine-formaldehyde resin and a commercial polyethylene glycol. If desired the aminoplast component may be alkylated with alcohols containing 1 to 3 carbon atoms.
