850,059. Spinning yarns; roller arrangements in textile spinning &c. machines. ANCIENS ETABLISSEMENTS CORDONNIER S. A. Oct. 8, 1957 [Oct. 8, 1956; May 24, 1957], No. 31391/57. Classes 120(2) and 120(3). A composite yarn consisting of a continuous core thread surrounded by discontinuous fibres is made by introducing into the drafting mechanism of a spinning frame (a) a core thread of continuous filaments pretreated so as to be of crimped form when relaxed and straight when taut and (b) a roving of discontinuous fibres in such a manner that the core thread is straightened and the roving entangled therewith to such an extent that the twist of the core is reversed, then contracting the core thread by vapour or hot water treatment so that it contracts upon the fibres entangled therewith. The core thread may be of nylon " stretch " yarn crimped by twisting, setting and untwisting and the fibres may be wool. In the drafting mechanism shown in Fig. 1, a roving 2 is drawn between rollers A and E during passage over tumbler rollers S1, S2, S3, and a crimped thread 1, having twist in excess of that which will exist in the final yarn and in the same direction, is introduced through an eyelet B, passes under pressure rollers A1, A2 and A3 whereby it is uniformly tensioned then between front rollers E: at the exit of rollers E, thread 1 and roving 2 are intertwisted to form yarn F. Modified drafting arrangements reduce interference by the thread with the drafting of the fibres: thus, as shown in Figs. 2, 3, 4, thread 1 passes under rollers A1 but may be diverted (as by means of a roller C) over roller A3 or rollers A2 and A3 before entering the nip of rollers E, and, as shown in Fig. 5, pretensioned thread 1 passes over all the pressure rollers.
