Abstract
A process for refining steel by blowing the whole or a major part of the slagforming material in finely divided form into or on to the melt from above in a converter or rotary furnace with an intermediate slagging operation comprises observation of the following conditions: (a) A first phase lasting at least 55% of the total time. (b) The quantity of free oxygen used in the first phase is at least 55% of the oxygen used in the first and second phases. (c) The amount of slag-forming material blown per unit volume of oxidizing gas is at the most equal to 80% of the amount in the second phase. The process may be carried out in a converter in which a fraction of the oxidizing gas is blown through bottom tuyeres. The finely divided slag-forming material, e.g. lime, may be added in commercially pure oxygen and the total amount of slag-forming material may be less than 80% of that used in conventional converter practice.
