Abstract
A process for the production of wrought articles from a magnesium-manganese alloy containing, apart from impurities, 0.3 to 2.5% of manganese, comprises heating a block of the alloy to 500 DEG C to 630 DEG C for at least two hours and then subjecting it to hot deformation. A billet may be heated to 500-630 DEG C for 2 to 20 hours, cooled slowly in the furnace, and extruded at 300 DEG C. The alloy may contain as impurity up to one quarter of the manganese content in total of one or more of the elements Al, Zn, Sn, Ca, Be, Cd, Li, Th, Ga, Pb, Bi, Ag, Fe, and rare earth metals. Zr and/or Ce may be present in amount up to 0.2% by weight.
