Abstract
856,636. Washing granular materials. KLOCKNER-HUMBOLDT-DEUTZ A. G. Sept. 26, 1957 [Sept. 27, 1956], No. 30278/57. Class 82(2) A dense medium consisting of powdered material of specific gravity 1.9 to 2.1 kg./litre, for use in a sink and float process for the preparation of bituminous coal having a grain size greater than 6 mm., is obtained as a by-product of the separation process. In the process as shown, after primary classification on the screen 1, fine coal having a grain size of up to 10 mm. is fed to the jig 3 and the resulting jigged refuse having a specific gravity of 1.8 to 2.2 kg./litre is separated in a sink and float apparatus 5, the floating material of specific gravity less than 2.1 kg./litre being ground in the mill 6 and the material drawn from the bottom of cone classifier 7 having a grain size of 0.1 to 1.5 mm. and a specific gravity of 1.9 to 2.1 kg./litre is suitable for use in the sink and float plant 2. Alternatively the refuse resulting from washing the fine coal may first be pulverized to a grain size up to about 1.5 mm. from which fine material up to 0.2 mm. is separated and the coarser residue is washed and settled to produce material in the desired range of specific gravity.
