Abstract

<PICT:0856522/IV(a)/1> Solid hydrolysis products are obtained from one or more liquid hydrolysable silanes, at least one silane containing at least one Si-bonded hydrocarbon radical, and water used in amount in excess of that stoichiometrically required for the hydrolysis of the silane(s), by finely spraying the silane(s) into a spacious reaction chamber so that the droplets fall freely into a mist layer produced by spraying the water into the chamber at a point or points below the silane inlet or inlets and recovering the product falling to the bottom of the reaction chamber. In operation, the silane is sprayed downwardly from one or more binary nozzles (2), by means of air dried at (3) or an inert gas pumped into the nozzle, into a continuous zone of water mist obtained from water sprayed from flat-jet nozzles (4). Gases leaving at (6) contain HCl (where chlorosilanes are used) and are free from Si compounds. The particles of hydrolysate collect in sump (5) and are removed from the reaction vessel (1) by means of a siphon (7) after being suspended in water. The process is applicable to silanes of the formula RSiX3, wherein R is an alkyl or aryl radical and X us preferably chlorine, alone or in admixture with other silanes, e.g. SiX4, HSiX3, R3SiX and R2SiX2, provided that the resulting hydrolysates are solids. Mixtures of 2 to 20 mols of SiX4 with 1 mol of R3SiX are preferred. The process is also applicable to the hydrolysis of diphenyldichlorosilane to give the corresponding diol. Specifications 659,022, 740,534 and 779,788 are referred to.ALSO:<PICT:0856522/III/1> An apparatus for the production of solid hydrolysis products comprises a spacious reaction vessel (1) fitted with one or more binary nozzles (2), through which the liquid hydrolysable material, e.g. silanes, is forced by means of air dried at (3) or an inert gas. Flatjet nozzles (4), through which water is forced to provide a continuous zone of water mist, are so disposed at a distance below nozzles (2) to prevent any water from reaching nozzles (2). The sump (5) into which the solid hydrolysate falls and collects is emptied by a siphon (7), and vent (6) allows gaseous reaction products to escape.
