Abstract

854,685. Disc brakes. RECHERCHES ETUDES PRODUCTION R.E.P. Dec. 23, 1957 [July 9, 1957], No. 39953/57. Class 103 (1). In an hydraulic multipledisc brake having a plurality of brake discs 7, 8, lining carriers 10, 12, 15 provided with linings 9, 11, 13 and 14 arranged alternately with the discs, a non- rotatable clamping member 4 comprises a jaw 6 at one end to support one of the lining carriers 15 and a brake applying piston and cylinder arrangement 19, 5 is provided for applying pressure to the other lining carrier 10 to compress the linings and discs together, characterized in that the jaw of the clamping member is forked to facilitate machining of the cylinder and also by the fact that the lining carrier 15 which it supports has a projecting boss 15<SP>1</SP> which engages both arms of the fork. Lining carrier 10 is provided with a similar projecting boss 10<SP>1</SP> which engages the piston 19. Lining carriers 10, 12, 15 can slide with play longitudinally along guide pins 16 and 17. The piston and cylinder arrangement 19, 5 is provided with an automatic adjusting device to compensate for brake lining wear. The adjustment is such that the pressure of spring 29 together with the frictional force of fluid-tight packing 24 is less than the frictional force of the sealing members 21 and 22 associated with piston 19 which slides within jacket 23. When fluid under pressure is admitted into the cylinder, the jacket 23 and the piston 19 are first moved together towards the right, against the action of spring 29. When the bottom of the jacket comes into abutment against the shoulder 27 of rigidly fixed member 25 housed in the cavity 20 of the piston, it is arrested but the piston continues to move towards the right-hand side of Fig. 1 against the friction of the sealing rings 21 and 22 so as to apply the brake. When the hydraulic pressure is removed, the jacket 23 moves back under the action of the spring 29, and by virtue of the high friction due to the sealing rings 21 and 22, it brings back with it piston 19 over a distance equal to the initial distance between the bottom of the jacket 23 and the shoulder 27. This at length constitutes the constant play under which the brake operates, whatever may be the condition of wear of its brake linings.
