Abstract
The invention comprises steroid compounds of the general formula: <FORM:0854672/IV(b)/1> wherein X represents a halogen atom, R represents an alkanoyl radical containing up to 6 carbon atoms and R1 represents hydrogen, or R and R1 both represent hydrogen atoms or alkanoyl radicals containing up to 6 carbon atoms by reacting steroid compounds of the general formula: <FORM:0854672/IV(b)/2> wherein R has the above significance, with a mild oxidising agent in the presence of water and an organic solvent such as osmic acid or a dilute solution of potassium permanganate to form compounds in which R is the alkanoyl radical and R1 is hydrogen, and if desired hydrolysing these compounds or acylating these compounds to form compounds in which R and R1 both represent hydrogen or the alkanoyl radicals respectively. In the examples the following compounds are prepared:-16a , 17a , 21-trihydroxy-12a -bromo-4-pregnene-3, 11, 20-trione and the corresponding 21-acetoxy and 16a , 21-diacetoxy compounds.ALSO:Pharmaceutical preparations, such as capsules, pills, tablets, solutions, for injection, ointments and salves, comprise a diluent and a steroid compound of the general formula: <FORM:0854672/VI/1> wherein X represents a halogen atom, R represents an alkanoyl radical containing up to 6 carbon atoms and R1 represents hydrogen, or both R and R1 represent hydrogen atoms or alkanoyl radicals containing up to 6 carbon atoms.
