Abstract
The invention comprises compounds of the formula : <FORM:0854409/IV(b)/1> wherein R1 is hydrogen or acyl and R2 is lower alkyl of up to 6 carbons, and their preparation by treating the corresponding 2-unsubstituted compounds with ethyl formate in the presence of sodium hydride and if required esterifying the resulting 2-hydroxy-methylene compound. The reaction is preferably effected in benzene under nitrogen, and specified products include 2-hy-droxymethylene-17a -methyl and ethyl-androstan17b -ol-3-ones and their 2-acetate, propionate, cyclopentylpropionate and benzoate esters.
