Abstract
Desludged, concentrated rubber latex of total solids at least 60% and containing alkali in quantity insufficient for preservation is preserved by addition of (i) an alkylene polyamine having 1-4 alkylene radicals containing 2-9 carbon atoms and 2-5 amine radicals, e.g. diethylene triamine, triethylene tetramine, tetraethylene pentamine, (ii) a benzyl trialkyl ammonium compound having the formula: <FORM:0854128/IV(a)/1> where R is hydrogen or an alkyl radical of 1-4 carbon atoms, R1 is an alkyl radical of 1-4 carbon atoms and R11 is the hydroxyl, sulphate, nitrate or sulphide radical, e.g. benzyl trimethyl-ammonium hydroxide, or disalicylal alkylene polyamines having the formula: <FORM:0854128/IV(a)/2> where R is an alkylene polyamine nucleus containing 3-9 carbon atoms and from 2-4 amine radicals and R1 is hydrogen or an alkyl radical having 1-9 carbon atoms, e.g. disalicylal propylene diamine. The alkali is exemplified by ammonia, sodium and potassium hydroxide and phosphate, mono-, di- and trimethyl- and ethylamines, piperidine, morpholine, tetramethyl and tetraethyl ammonium hydroxides. Usually, 0,1-1% of the preservative, based on the water content of the latex, is used with ammonia in concentrations of 0,1-1%. The latex may contain also an anionic or non-ionic surface-active agent. The pH of the preserved latex is 8,5-10,5.
