Abstract

843,078. Charging glass-melting furnaces. LIBBEY-OWNES-FORD GLASS CO. Oct. 28, 1958 [Oct. 28, 1957], No. 34426/58. Class 51 (2). In apparatus for charging glass-melting furnaces in which batch materials are deposited on the surface of molten glass in the form of sheets or layers and propelled into the furnace, cullet from a hopper B passes over a belt 24 and a shoot 25 into a dog-house 15, batch material is fed from a hopper C by a rotary pocketed drum 101 on top of the cullet, and a driven watercooled roller D closes the gap between the glass and a furnace end wall 21. The belt 24 is mounted on a frame 23 tiltable about pivots 36 by screwed rods 28 suspended from the hopper B, said frame also carrying a motor 56 driving the belt 24 through chain-and-sprocket gearing. The mouth of hopper B has a verticallyadjustable plate 87, Fig. 5, controlling the forward passage of cullet. The shoot 25 is pivotally-mounted on the frame 23 and has upper vertically-disposed ribs and a deflector 69 with sloping inverted V-shaped walls diverting cullet from the centre of the shoot. The drum 101 is driven through a chain-and-sprocket drive and reduction gearing from a motor 116. Further control of the batch material is ensured by a pivotally-mounted arcuate plate 118 adjacent the periphery of the drum. The roller is driven by chain-and-sprocket gearing from the axle of the drum 101. The drive of the motors 56 and 116 may be synchronized to control the amounts of materials, or one motor may be used provided with variable gearing to the different driven members, Figs. 11 and 12 (not shown).
