Abstract
Ethylenically unsaturated monomers are polymerized in a system comprising water, an oxidant and, as an emulsifier, a compound of the formula X1(CF2-CFCl)nCF2(CH2)mR, in which X1 is fluorine, chlorine or bromine or a perhalomethyl radical containing fluorine, chlorine or bromine, n is an integer of 2 to 9, R is an hydrophilic group and m is 0 or 1 and is O only when R contains a <FORM:0840735/IV(a)/1> group; the resulting latex is then coagulated, and the polymer separated and dried. Monomers specified are perfluoropropene, tetrafluoroethylene, chlortrifluoroethylene, trifluoroethylene, vinylidene fluoride, vinyl fluoride, difluorodichloroethylene, alphamethyl phenyl difluoroethylene and perfluoroacrylonitrile which may be polymerized alone or in admixture with one another or with other monomers such as vinyl or vinylidene chloride. The emulsifiers used may be those disclosed in Specifications 784,727 and 795,513. Oxidants specified are potassium persulphate and the other oxidants disclosed in Specification 795,513, which may be used in conjunction with the sodium salts of sulphur containing reducing acids and a small quantity of iron. The pH of the reaction mixture may be between 3 and 13 and is preferably between 6 and 10. The polymer latex may be coagulated by freezing and the separated polymer washed first with water and then with an organic solvent. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 795,513.
