Abstract

840,299. Window operating apparatus. BENDIX-WESTINGHOUSE AUTOMOTIVE AIR BRAKE CO. Oct. 21, 1958 [Nov. 13, 1957], No. 33654/58. Class 20(3) [Also in Group XXVIII] A vehicle window 10, Fig. 1, is moved vertically by means of a scissors linkage 12, 24 actuated by a pneumatic motor 18. On moving the handle 38 of a valve block 40, air under pressure is admitted through line 44 or 46 to one or other end of motor 18, the opposite end being vented to atmosphere. The piston 32, Fig. 2, is provided with passages 80, 82 closed by spring pressed valves 88, 90, the arrangement being such that should the window 10 meet an obstruction and pressure consequently build up on one side of the piston 32, above a certain pressure it is vented to the opposite side of the piston, and thus to atmosphere, to prevent -damage to the mechanism or injury to passengers. The window is locked by a surface 60 of an opening 62 in a locking member 56, engaging an extension rod 64 on the piston 32. On admitting air under pressure through either port 34 or 36 to the cylinder 50, a valve 72 is moved to allow air to pass through passage 70 to release the locking member 56 before the piston 32 moves.
