Abstract

Decahydro-3a, 6, 6, 9a-tetramethyl-naptho [2,1-b] furan-2-one is prepared by brominating the lactone of 2-hydroxy-2, 5, 5, 8a-tetramethyldecahydronaphthaleneacetic acid with N-bromosuccinimide and heating the product with 2, 4, 6-trimethylpyridine. The intermediate and final products are purified by chromatography.ALSO:To impart a cedarwood odour thereto, cigarette, cigar or pipe tobacco low in flavour and aroma has incorporated into it a small amount, preferably from 0,1 to 1,0% by weight, of an additive comprising any or all of the following compounds:-(A) 2-hydroxy-2,5,5,8a-tetramethyldecahydronaphthaleneacetic acid, (B) the lactone of the acid, (C) decahydro-3a, 6,6,9a-tetramethyl-naptho [2,1-b] furan-2-one. Additional additives such as those disclosed in Specification 806,407 may be incorporated in the tobacco. The acid and its lactone may be prepared from sclareol, a terpene-like compound contained in the leaves of Salvia sclarea. Compound (C) is an unsaturated derivative of the lactone and its preparation therefrom is described (see Group IV(b)). The additive may be applied in the form of a liquid solution or suspension by spraying or dipping, preferably after ageing, curing and shredding of the tobacco but before its formation into cigarettes. A proportion of additive larger than the range specified above may be incorporated into a tobacco which is then blended with other tobaccos to give a proportion within the specified range. The liquid carrying medium for the additive during application may be water, alcohols, ether, acetone or volatile hydrocarbons, and an additive solution in ethyl alcohol for treating burley tobacco is described.
