Abstract

846,702. Hand-tool handles. CLAYTONWRIGHT Ltd., H. July 5, 1957 [July 12, 1956], No. 21528/56. Class 61. A handle 10 is attached to a pick, hammer, axe or other tool by a resilient sleeve 12 of rubber or rubber like material enclosed by an outer metal sleeve 13 over which the head of the tool is fitted. As shown in Fig. 1, the tapered rubber sleeve 12 is bonded to the outer surface of the metal handle 10 and to an outer metal sleeve which is formed in two spaced halves 13 which are forced together when the tool head is fitted over the outer sleeve. In a modification the rubber sleeve is bonded to the tubular handle and to a continuous outer metal tube having an internal diameter slightly larger than the diameter of the eye in the tool head, the sleeve being contracted when the head is fitted. In another modification, Fig. 5, the rubber sleeve 18 is bonded to the metal handle 16 and to an outer metal sleeve 19, the portion 20 of the handle within the sleeve 18 being expanded radially to place the rubber in a state of radial compression. In another modification the rubber is bonded only to the tubular handle, the outer sleeve having a diameter slightly smaller than the initial external diameter of the rubber sleeve and the ends of the outer sleeve being peened over the rubber.
