Classes 64(1) and 64(3) A cylindrical waste gas to air heat recuperator which includes upper and lower air distribution boxes 11, 12 comprises an outer shell 31 drawn tightly but in a resilient manner around an inner shell 25, being separated therefrom by equally spaced distance pieces extending between the inner and outer shells. Figs. 1 and 2 show one form in which angle irons 35, 36 secured to the edges of a longitudinal slit in the outer shell are urged towards each other by springs 38, 39 mounted on tensioning bolts 37. The inner shell is preferably provided on the air side with fins 26 which may be attached to the wall (Fig. 2) and may be continuous, or as shown they may comprise short sections separated by gaps such as 29, 30. A number of these fins extend to the outer shell and constitute the distance pieces. The fins may be formed by deforming the wall (see Figs. 12a, 12b). Slots 41 in the air distribution boxes in the region of the resilient joint in the outer shell, permit relative expansion between the boxes and the shell. The inner shell may comprise a plurality of cast sections the distance pieces then comprising cast-in steel extensions (Figs. 9, 10 and 11, not shown). The recuperator may be supported by rods extending from the upper air distribution box 11 on a bed plate incorporating an inlet for the flue gases (Fig. 5, not shown).
