Abstract

A lubricating grease comprises a major proportion of a mineral oil and a minor proportion, sufficient to form a grease, of a mixture of soaps, the acid components of which comprise 15-80% by weight of wool grease fatty acids and the balance aliphatic acids having at least twelve carbon atoms per molecule, the metal components of the soaps being lithium and at least one of calcium, strontium, barium, zinc, potassium or tin, the ratio of lithium to each of these metals being between 27 and 4:1; 42 and 2.8:1; 33 and 3:1; 30 and 5:1; 50 and 10:1; and 50 and 8:1 respectively provided that where potassium or tin soaps are used there should be present a wool grease fatty acid soap of potassium or tin. The mineral oil may be naphthenic or paraffinic in character having a viscosity of 1-6000 seconds (s.u.v.) at 100 DEG F. The wool grease fatty acids are as described in the parent Specification. Representative aliphatic acids are stearic, 12-hydroxy stearic, oleic, palmitic, hydroxy palmitic, myristic and hydroxy myristic acids and mixtures obtained from natural oils or their hydrogenated derivatives such as stearin, hydrogenated tallow fatty acids, hydrogenated soya bean fatty acids, hydrogenated fish oils and partially hydrogenated marine, vegetable and animal oils. The soaps can be preformed or formed in situ by methods such as described in the parent Specification. They may be present in total amounts of 5-30% by weight of the composition. Optional ingredients include antioxidants, such as amines, phenols and sulphides, and lubricity improving agents, such as free fat, free fatty acids, esters of alkyl and/or aryl acids, sulphurised fats and lead soaps; such components may be present in amounts of 0.1-10% by weight of the composition.
