Abstract
845,053. Light modulating. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. (Lorenz A. G., C.). May 29, 1958, No. 17121/58. Class 40(3). An electrically controllable optical device comprises a layer 1 (Fig. 1) of a substance (e.g. an alkali halide) sandwiched between two electrically conducting layers 2, 3, at least one of which is transparent, the device operating to vary the transparency of layer 1 when a potential difference is established between layers 2 and 3. By forming the layer 1 or the layers 2, 3 in the shape of symbols &c., the latter may be made visible on the application of the potential difference in one polarity and "wiped out" by reversing the polarity (or by the application of heat). Fig. 2, shows an arrangement in which two devices of this kind are operated in "series" one of the conducting layers 6 associated with the first controllable layer 7 and both of the conducting layers 10 and 12 associated with the second controllable layer 11 being provided with "cut-out" patterns in the form of desired symbols which are rendered visible by operation of either or both of switches 15; 17 and "wiped out" by operation of the polarity reversing switch 14. In this arrangement elements 5 and 9 are glass plates and element 13 an optical filter which filters out that portion of the spectrum of the light from source 16 which is not stopped by the layers 7 and 11. The conducting layers may be evaporated metal layers on glass or mica sheets.
