Abstract
832,791. Making heat exchangers; brazing. MARSTON EXCELSIOR Ltd. Oct. 15, 1957 [Oct. 18, 1956], No. 31726/56. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A composite metal body which can be joined to other metal bodies in the presence of flux and heat and comprising a core with a coating of brazing material on one or both surfaces, has one or more inserts of weld-preventing material in the core. A core 1 of aluminium or aluminium alloy which has been cast over parallel inserts 2 of pulverizable weld-preventing material extending from end to end of the core is coated on both sides with an aluminium silicon alloy 3 containing 2-12% silicon. The body is rolled between heated rollers to form a strip, the inserts being thereby crushed to powder and hydraulic pressure is applied to the slits occupied by the powder to form passages. Such a strip may be used in the manufacture of a heat exchanger. The body may be produced by pressure welding by rolling two sheets of aluminium or aluminium alloy with a pattern of weld-preventing material therebetween and coating the external surfaces of the resultant sheet with brazing alloy. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 784,484.
