Abstract
832,175. Drying paper &c. LIPPKE, P. Nov. 4, 1958 [Nov. 30, 1957], No. 35359/58. Class 96. In the manufacture of paper &c, heat for drying the web is derived from a diesel engine plant which also generates electricity, heat from the diesel water-cooling system being used in the web-forming and wet press portions of the paper-making machine to heat the fibrous web and to heat the wet press felts to improve water-removal, electric resistance heating or electric radiation being used for heating the web and felt of the last wet press using electric energy generated by the diesel engine (so as to facilitate further water removal), air for a subsequent air-dryer being heated by heat remaining in the cooling water and by what would otherwise be waste heat of the exhaust gases, and the web is further heated by electric radiation in a pre-drying zone of a cylinder dryer part of the paper-making machine, so that only such an amount of water then remains in the web as can be dried off by heat from steam raised in an exhaust gas boiler. A heat-exchanger may heat the web on the wirecloth by means of a dandy roll.
