Abstract

A method of treating a quantity of polytetrafluoroethylene comprises applying thereto while it is within a temperature range defined by the second order transition temperature and a higher maximum temperature, superatmospheric pressure which is insufficient to produce cracks, in a pressure exerting device such as a mould until by visual inspection the quantity becomes wholly transparent but for an insufficient time to produce appreciable decomposition of the polytetrafluoroethylene, and cooling the quantity through the transition temperature, said maximum temperature being below that which produces appreciable decomposition of the polytetrafluoroethylene while it is within said temperature range. Shock-cooling may be employed, e.g. by transferring the quantity to a cold mould or immersing it in a cold fluid. The quantity may be moulded and treated successively or simultaneously by employing pressure sufficient to mould the hot quantity to the desired shape. To facilitate removal of the quantity from the mould the latter may be faced with removable liners of conductive material, e.g. aluminium foil, and the liners and quantity removed as a unit and immersed in the cooling fluid. The polytetrafluoroethylene may contain additives which colour the quantity, and may then be subjected to conditions which are found to produce transparency in an equivalent pure quantity. The process of the invention may be used to prepare diaphragm valve diaphragms having a greater flex life than those prepared by conventional methods.
