Abstract

837,618. Smoothing pump discharge pressure. FISHER, J. C. March 25, 1957 [April 17, 1956], No. 9623/57. Classes 102(1) and 102(2). A pressure smoothing device S for combination with a pump P delivering a unidirectional pulsating flow comprises two identical bellows 92, 94 having their closed ends secured to a movable cross-head 84 and their open ends connected by conduits 104, 105 to the intake and discharge pipes 74, 72, respectively of the pump P. The cross-head 84 slides on rods 82 and is provided with ports 90 which provide communication between the spaces surrounding the bellows which is filled with an incompressible liquid. The bellows are surrounded by helical springs 110, 112 and the stiffness of these springs and the bellows are so chosen that the smoothing device is tuned to a predetermined harmonic of pressure pulsation frequency in the discharge line 72 whereby the pulsations in the discharge line are smoothed. The smoothing device may be in the form of a diaphragm between two chambers connected respectively to the intake and discharge lines. The smoothing device may be in the intake and discharge of a circuit fed by several pumps. The pump P may be of the type described in Specification 837,617 or may comprise two bellows 16, 18 secured to a crosshead 15 which is oscillated by a crank 42. The bellows are filled with liquid and actuation of the crank causes an oscillation of the liquid in conduits 68 and 70 which pumps the liquid from inlet pipe 74 to the discharge pipe 72.
