Abstract

836,599. Flexible conduits. DAYTON RUBBER CO. July 3, 1956 [July 5, 1955], No. 20526/56. Class 99(2). A flexible conduit comprises a helically corrugated tubular body 11 formed with helical crests and troughs around the outer periphery thereof, a helical reinforcing member 12 positioned within the body and within the crests, and a multiple conductor, insulated, electric cable 17 removably embracing the outer surface of the body and positioned within the troughs whereby to protect the cable against abrasion while permitting accessibility to the cable for inspection, repair, removal and replacement. There are separate means near each end of the body for anchoring the cable thereto at the points where the cable enters and leaves the troughs. The body 11 may be of rubber or synthetic material such as butadiene-styrene copolymers, butadiene acrylonitrile copolymers, polysulphide rubbers, polychloroprene, elastomeric polyvinyl, or polyethylene. As shown the helical, wire reinforcing coil 12 is covered by rubberised tape or fabric 13 applied to follow the turns of the coil or as a sheet wrapped about the body and coil ; there is an outer tubularly woven, stockinet cover 14 of cotton, rayon or nylon. The cable 17 is looped about the ends of the conduit and tied in a knot, or anchored by a string or cord 20. Sleeves 21 of elastic material fitted at the ends of the conduit have clamped thereon receptacles 23 for the cable. In making the hose, the tube 11 is placed upon a mandrel and the coil 12 is positioned thereover and stretched axially, after which the tape 13 is applied ; the assembly may be subjected to preliminary vulcanization. The partially made conduit is positioned on a second mandrel and a tensioned, inextensible cord wound round the conduit and between the turns of the coil to form the helical corrugation. Finally, the conduit is cured and the cable is wound firmly into the trough of the corrugation.
