Abstract

836,423. Wall coverings; bricks. WESSEL, H. July 23, 1956 [July 26, 1955; July 27, 1955], No. 22727/56. Classes 20(4) and 87(1) [Also in Group XXIII] A wall, brick or breeze block is provided with a ceramic or vitreous surface layer by applying thereto two separate layers of ceramic-forming or ' vitrifiable material, the outer layer being heated to sinter or vitrify it and attach it firmly to the intermediate layer. The surface of a wall is moistened with a solution of water glass prior to plastering thereon of the first ceramic-forming layer which contains blast furnace pumice, clay and sand mixed to a paste with water glass. to which may be applied a second intermediate layer containing sand, clay and aluminous cement. After hardening, which may be assisted by heating to about 650‹C., the outer layer is applied containing quartz, borax, feldspar, sodium carbonate, kryolite, sodium nitrate and barium carbonate. Metallic oxides may be added to colour the outer layer which is heated to vitrifying temperature by a transportable heater 3, Fig. 2, comprising electric heater elements 5 backed by a refractory block 3 covered by a reflector 7. This heater is arranged on rails so that it can be moved over the whole surface to be treated. Expansion joints may be ground in the intermediate material layer and filled with heat resistant material such as asbestos rope or with organic material which burns off during firing to leave empty channels. The intermediate layers may be applied using a vibrating trowel which temporarily reduces the viscosity. The second intermediate layer may be omitted; alternatively this layer may form the outer layer if a sintered surface is desired Other ceramic-forming mixtures for the intermediate and outer layers are given and glass spheres or other ornamental materials may be embedded in the outer layer prior to heating thereof. The heating oven may be heated by gas or electricity and waste heat from the oven may be used to preheat the next portion of the surface to which the oven is to be moved. High frequency heating may also be used in which case a wire mesh is embedded in the intermediate layer. If the surface of the intermediate layer is very rough, a thin layer of smoother material is applied prior to the application of the outer layer.
