Abstract

The invention comprises 4,41-bis-acetoxy methyl diphenyl ether (I) and 4,41 dimethylol diphenyl ether (II). The 4,41 bis-acetoxymethyl diphenyl ether may be prepared by heating 4 : 41 bis-chloromethyl diphenyl ether under reflux with an alkali metal acetate in glacial acetic acid, and the product isolated. 4 : 41 Dimethylol diphenyl ether may be prepared from the above compound (I) by heating it with a solution, in an aqueous alcohol, of an alkali metal hydroxide and isolating and purifying the ether so formed. Pure 4,41 bis-acetoxymethyl diphenyl ether may be obtained by acetylating 4,41 dimethylol diphenyl ether, which has been purified by distillation and recrystallization, with acetic acid and pyridine.ALSO:Resins are obtained by condensation between 4,41-dimethylol diphenyl ether and phthalic anhydride, or by an ester interchange reaction between 4,41 bis acetoxymethyl diphenyl ether and diethyl phthalate.
