Abstract

A composition to remove carbonaceous deposits, sludge and rust from metallic parts, for example, by being added to the fuel or lubricating oil of an internal combustion engine comprises: (a) a refined paraffinic or naphthenic mineral oil with pH value between 6.9 and 7.1 and boiling range 550-750 DEG F., (b) an organic solvent for tarry and gummy substances having a pH of 6.9 to 7.1, and (c) a normally liquid aldehyde with a boiling point above 302 DEG F. which does not polymerize after admixture with the mineral oil and solvent at temperatures below its boiling point. The aldehyde may be aliphatic or aromatic excepting formaldehyde, acetaldehyde or aldehydes which polymerize easily, e.g. furfural and is preferably an alkyl benzene, such as benzaldehyde, cinnamic aldehyde, phenyl acetaldehyde, phenyl propyl aldehyde, amyl cinnamic aldehyde, salicylic aldehyde, anisic aldehyde or mixtures of the above or a mixture of benzaldehyde and phenyl acetic aldehyde. The solvent is selected from benzene, xylol or toluene with a pH of 7. A preferred mixture comprises equal parts of the solvent and mineral oil to 100 parts of which mixture 2-2 1/2 parts of an alkyl benzene are added; the resulting mixture may be added to gasoline in the proportion of 2-10 parts of the additive to 98-90 parts of gasoline. One part of the additive can also be added to 8-10 parts of the engine oil. Benzyl alcohol may be included in the composition of the additive.
