Abstract

835,723. Pipe couplings ; laying pipes. MORRISON, A. C. Sept. 3, 1958 [Oct. 31, 1957], No. 34018/57. Classes 99(1) and 99(2). A coupling comprises opposed and interengageable hollow castings 1, 9 which are adapted to be secured to pipe sections 2, 21, the casting 1 being grooved or slotted and the casting 9 being provided with oppositelydirected trunnions 15, the relative formations of the trunnions and the grooves or slots being such that, by inserting one casting axially within the other and imparting relative angular movement between the castings, the trunnions are received within the grooves or slots so as to loosely hold the castings together for universal relative movement, within limits. The coupling incorporates a resilient, annular, sealing member 12 adapted to be automatically pressed, by the pressure of liquid within the coupled pipes, into contact with portions of the interengaged castings to seal the latter irrespective of relative misalignments of the castings. As shown, the casting 1 has an end portion forming a cavity for reception of the nose 9b of the casting 9, and an internal rib 3 for locating the end of the pipe 2 which is retained in position by a flanged band 5a integral with the casting 1. The latter is also provided with a groove for reception of a rubber sealing-ring 4, and an annular groove which accommodates the sealing ring 12, of U-shaped cross-section, the limbs of which respectively engage with the groove and the nose portion 9b. Externally of the casting 9 are the spherically-ended trunnions 15 which engage in grooves in the bulbous extension 13 of the casting 1. The casting 1 incorporates splayed limbs 16 forming a base, a stem for the attachment of a spraying nozzle, and a valve.
