Abstract

835,405. X-ray apparatus. METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO. Ltd. July 6, 1956 [July 6, 1955], No. 19556/55. Class 98(1) In X-ray apparatus, electrical equipment is housed in a pivoted container which is filled with insulating liquid and provided with a liquid lock comprising an auxiliary chamber with a port communicating with the container and an upper vent to the atmosphere, the port being so arranged that it remains covered by the insulating liquid when the container is tilted provided a given angle of tilt is not exceeded. As shown, electrical equipment 3 is immersed in oil 2 in a container 1 tiltable about an axis 6. An auxiliary chamber 7 is connected by a port 8 to container 1, and contains oil to a level 10 which varies with oil temperature, the air in chamber 7 passing through a vent 9 to the atmosphere. Port 8 and vent 9 are so arranged that, for angles of tilt not exceeding the given value, port 8 is always covered, and vent 9 uncovered, by the oil. Chamber 7 may have a transparent wall marked with a scale showing the oil level at various temperatures. Container 1 is filled through inlet 11; afterwards drain 12 is opened to let oil run out of chamber 7 until level 10 is at the required height.
