An aqueous antiperspirant comprises: (1) zirconyl hydroxy chloride of empirical formula ZrOOHCl, and (2) an aluminium chlorhydroxide complex of general empirical formula Al 2 (OH) 6-n Cl n , where n has an average value of about 0.8 to 1.2, for example, Al 2 (OH) 5 Cl xH 2 O where x is about 2, and the molar ratio of (2) to (1) is between 0.5 : 1 and 3 :1. If required to prevent gelling, a water-soluble amino acid (3), having equal numbers of amino and carboxyl groups in the molecule may be added. Specified amino acids are glycine, dl-valine, #-alanine, dl-methionine, dl-tryptophane, dl-#-phenyl-alanine. Bacteriostatic, germicidal and/or deoderizing agents, e.g. hexachlorophene or quaternary ammonium salts such as p-diiso-butyl phenoxy ethoxy ethyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride monohydrate may be optionally added. The total concentration of constituents (1) and (2) on an anhydrous basis may be from 5 to 30%, preferably 8 to 20% by weight of the composition and that of (3) being from 0 to 17.5%, the proportions of (1), (2) and (3) being so related that the composition may be represented as being within the shaded portion of the graph. Examples of compositions given are (a) a cream comprising 5% by weight of (1), 7.5% of (2), 2% of (3), 59.1% water, 10% glyceryl monostearate, spermaceti wax, mineral oil, polyoxyethylene 50 stearate, glycerine, TiO 2 and perfume; (b) a lotion comprising the same amounts of (1), (2) and (3) with 75.8% water, 2% glyceryl monostearate, spermaceti wax, mineral oil, polyoxyethylene 100 stearate, glycerine, veegum and perfume ; and (c) a liquid comprising the same amounts of (1), (2) and (3), 81.3% water, " Tween 80 " (Registered Trade Mark)," ethanol and perfume.
