Abstract

835,250. Clothes washing machines. ARMSTRONG & CO. Ltd., J. March 8, 1957 [March 12, 1956; May 9, 1956], Nos. 7633/56 and 14387/56. Class 138 (2). Clothes are washed by continuously passing a weak, premixed detergent solution, fed to the top of the wash tub, through one or more washing machines independently, each of which machine is steam heated and has a rotary, perforated washing receptacle, a constant volume of liquid being maintained in the machine, and the supply of detergent, steam and rinsing liquid to each machine being controllable independently. As shown, the detergent solution is pumped from either tank 17 or 18 (one tank being replenished whilst the other is in use) via the ring main pipes 12 and 13 to the machines, each of which comprises an outer case 1 containing a rotary perforated washing receptacle 3, detergent solution being supplied through pipe 8 and valve 7 and flowing over the weir 6 to the outlet 5 thereby maintaining a constant volume of liquid in the machine. Steam is supplied from pipe 14 to heat the washing liquor, and cold rinsing water is supplied from pipe 15. A suitable electric circuit is described and illustrated for the automatic operation of the machines through washing and rinsing cycles. Specification 828,304 is referred to.
