Abstract
835,201. Electrode furnaces. ELEMELT Ltd. April 12, 1956 [Feb. 22, 1955(2)], Nos. 5240/55 and 5242/55. Class 39(3) [Also in Group XXIII] In the refining zone of a glass furnace having separate melting and refining zones or, as shown, in the common melting and refining zone 10, electrodes 13, 14 are provided along and preferably slightly in front of the end walls 30, 31 to form an alternating current path along the length of the zone to induce the convection currents shown in Fig. 3, and an opening 37 is provided in the floor of the furnace of such dimensions that a downward pull is exerted on the lower portion (i.e. the more refined portion) of the glass above the opening, which pull exceeds the upward convection flow which continues in the (less refined) upper portion. The opening communicates with a duct 12 leading to the forehearth or other zone 11 of the furnace and the dimensions of the opening are:- Length L (i.e. dimension parallel to the current path between electrodes 13 and 14) between one eighth and one half the length of the current path, and width W between half and the whole of the width of the zone 10, L in the form shown being less than W. The electrodes may be as described in Specification 756,382, and coolers 53 acting on-the blocks 54 near the ends of the opening may be provided. Electrodes may be provided in the duct 12 or, as shown, electrodes 15 may be provided in the zone 11 so that an auxiliary current path is formed in the duct 12 and the auxiliary current is of such magnitude as to produce the desired working temperature in the glass in the zone 11.
