Abstract

834,818. Proofing wood against fire and biological attack. AMERICAN ZINC, LEAD & SMELTING CO. June 11, 1956 [July 20, 1955], No. 18031/56. Class 140. Wood is fireproofed by successive impregnations in either order with a soluble zinc salt and a basic material so as to form an insoluble zinc salt in situ. Solutions in water or alcohol may be used. Preferably the wood is first impregnated with an aqueous solution of zinc chloride, zinc sulphate, chromated zinc chloride, or chromated zinc sulphate and then with a solution of sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate, ammonia, or an alkylene oxide such as ethylene oxide or less desirably styrene oxide, or with gaseous ammonia or alkylene oxide. Impregnation may be assisted by applying a vacuum before applying the solutions, followed by application of pressure during impregnation. After the first impregnation part of the impregnating solution remaining and filling the pores may be removed as by leaching with water or application of vacuum. Small amounts of bromides, phosphates, arsenites, arsenates and borates may be included in the impregnants, e.g. as additions toxic to fungi, termites and as repellants to marine borers, and magnesium chloride may also be present. After an initial impregnation with zinc chloride, the wood may be impregnated with an ammoniacal solution of zinc chloride or basic zinc chloride. Low-conductivity impregnated wood may be obtained by the use of zinc chloride and an alkylene oxide, the chlorohydrins formed being non-ionic. If desired, prior to kiln drying the soluble salts remaining may be leached out. Specifications 510,420, 834,819 and U.S.A.
