Abstract

In the production of calcium carbide an aqueous solution of calcium formate is used as a binder for lime hydrate and a carbonaceous reducing agent, the mix being compacted into pellets that are resistant to abrasion and disintegration. In an example, lime hydrate, soft coal, and saturated calcium formate are mixed to a paste, extruded into pellets 1/4 inch by 1/2 inch and dried at 125 DEG C. They are then calcined in an arc furnace to produce calcium carbide. In another example, lime hydrate deriving from acetylene generation is alone bonded by calcium formate solution, formed into pellets, and calcined at 950 DEG C.ALSO:In the production of high carbon ferroalloys an aqueous solution of calcium formate is used as a binder for ferromanganese or ferrochromium ore and carbon, the mix being compacted into pellets that are resistant to abrasion and disintegration. In two examples mixes of soft coal, saturated calcium formate solution, with (a) Indian Mn ore and calcined MgO, and with (b) Transvaal chromium ore, lime hydrate and silica flour, are extruded into pellets, dried at 125 DEG C., and charged into an arc furnace to produce high carbon ferromanganese and ferrochromium.ALSO:Compacts of finely-particulated reactant material that are resistant to abrasion and disintegration are made by admixing the material with an aqueous solution of calcium formate and then compacting and drying the mixture. The calcium formate, which may be in saturated or unsaturated solution, preferably forms 2 to 6% by weight of material, and the mix is suitably extruded or compacted into pellets or briquettes of less than 3/4 inch in diameter which are then dried at about 125 DEG C. Two applications are described: in the manufacture of calcium carbide, lime hydrate is mixed with a carbonaceous reducing agent and calcium formate, and in the production of high carbon ferroalloys, ferromanganese or ferrochromium ore and carbon are mixed with calcium formate. In an example, calcium formate solution is employed as a binder for lime hydrate alone.
