Abstract
The invention comprises xanthyl-9-glycollic acid, xanthylidene-9-acetic acid and the preparation of xanthyl-9-glycollic acids of the formula <FORM:0822720/IV (a)/1> and/or xanthylidene-9-acetic acids of the formula <FORM:0822720/IV (a)/2> where R is hydrogen, a halogen atom having an atomic number of at least 17 or a C1-6 alkyl or alkoxy group, which comprises heating an aqueous solution of a xanthyl alpha-halogenoacetic acid of the formula <FORM:0822720/IV (a)/3> at a pH above 2 and, when necessary, acidifying the product. By suitable adjustment of the pH during heating, one or other of the products may be obtained exclusively. 9-Methylenexanthene is obtained as a by-product. Xanthylbromoacetic acid is obtained by reacting xanthydrol with bromomalonic acid to give xanthylbromomalonic acid which is then monodecarboxylated by heating in an aromatic hydrocarbon solvent.
