[Also in Group XXIII] A quick-release chuck 60 for engagement with the hexagonal shaft 68 of a fixture carrying workpieces through a finishing compound in a polishing machine (Group XXIII) is secured by a pin 150 to the vertical spindle 54 of the machine and comprises a sleeve 160 which is axially-movable on a body portion 148 of the chuck and is provided with a recess 168 so that when moved to its upper position against a spring 164, a series of balls 158 can move radially outward to disengage a circumferential groove in the shaft 68 to permit its removal from the chuck. The workpieces are initially mounted on a ring or spider of the fixture which is placed so that a conical washer 222 welded to the shaft 68 rests on a similar washer 220 on a lifting device 76 positioned adjacent the chuck. In order to lift the shaft when loaded with workpieces into the chuck, a fork-shaped yoke 216, which carries the correspondingly fork-shaped washer 220 and is secured to a sleeve 172 axially movable on a shaft 170, can be released from its lower position so that a spring 212 lifts the shaft 68 into the chuck by disengaging a projection 200 on a tubular cap 194, which is axially secured but radially displaceable on pins 202 against a leaf spring 206, from a slot 214 in the shaft 170. A further slight upward manual pressure then positions the groove in the chuck for reception of the balls 158 on downward movement of the sleeve 160 to lock the shaft 68 in the chuck. The upper position of the lifting device can be adjusted by a screw 224 on the head carrying the device engaging the tubular cap 194.
