Class 39(3) [Also in Group VIII] A method of uniformly heating flexible material in strip or tape form includes the steps of winding the material together with a flexible heating band or to a roller so as to form a roll having a plurality of superposed layers alternately of material to be heated and heating band, rotating the roll so formed and simultaneously applying heat from the heating band to the material and applying pressure to the roll by at least one pressure roller. As shpwn, apparatus for carrying out the method comprises a main roller 1 about which flexible material 2 and a heating band 3 incorporating electric resistors are wound in interleaved relationship to form a roll, pressure rollers 4 which are urged against the roll by pneumatic cylinders 5 acting through levers 6, and an insulated cover 7 provided with heaters 8 and fans 9. Current is supplied to the band 3 by way of sliding contacts on the rollers 1 and 4 until the desired temperature, measured as a function of the resistance by an instrument 12 (Fig. 2, not shown), is attained, the temperature then being maintained constant by adjustment of the heaters 8 and fans 9.
