Abstract
Carbon dioxide is detected in a gas by passing the gas through an indicator tube containing hydrazine and a reduction-oxidation indicator supported on a granular carrier, the presence of carbon dioxide causing the reagent to change colour. The reduction-oxidation indicator may be a triphenylmethane dyestuff, e.g. methyl violet, and may be dissolved in a polyvalent alcohol, e.g. glycol or glycerine. In an example the carrier is calcium aluminium silicate. The amount of carbon dioxide present may be estimated from the length of the colour change in the tube. The carbon dioxide content of flue gas or the air in coal mines may be measured; the test is also of use in the manufacture of silage, coal gas, or carbon dioxide itself, and in the fermentation of beer.
